Your home broadband router is the central traffic controller for every connected device in your property. Fine-tuning a few key settings inside your router's administrative dashboard can eliminate stream buffering and stabilise stream playback.
1. Split 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi Bands
Many default ISP routers (such as the Virgin Media Hub or BT Smart Hub) combine the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies into a single unified network name (SSID), automatically shifting devices between bands:
- The Problem: 2.4GHz has long range but is slow and prone to interference. 5GHz is fast and clean but has shorter range. When your router decides to switch your TV to 2.4GHz mid-stream, your video buffers.
- The Fix: In your router settings, disable "Smart Wi-Fi" and assign unique names to each band (e.g.
Home-WiFi-2.4GandHome-WiFi-5G). Manually connect your streaming television exclusively to the 5GHz network.
2. Configure Custom DNS Servers
Default ISP Domain Name System (DNS) servers are frequently sluggish at resolving international media server addresses and are often configured to filter streaming domains.

Changing DNS servers inside your router accelerates initial stream connection handshakes and prevents DNS-level domain blocking.
3. Enable Quality of Service (QoS)
If your router supports QoS, configure a traffic prioritisation rule for your television's IP address or MAC address. This tells your router: If network congestion occurs, never drop packets destined for the television; throttle background downloads instead.
